In a recent issue of your paper an article by Dr. Frank Crane likened Christian Science healing to the method employed by Coue, the French hypnotist. In a few words it can be shown that the two systems of healing are diametrically opposed to each other. Christian Science healing is brought about through the action of the divine Mind upon human thought. Its purpose is always to bless and to heal physically, morally, and spiritually. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes on page 228 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"; "Mortals will some day assert their freedom in the name of Almighty God. Then they will control their own bodies through the understanding of divine Science. Dropping their present beliefs, they will recognize harmony as the spiritual reality and discord as the material unreality." Thus it is readily seen that man's dominion over sickness and sin must come from gaining access to the divine Mind, thereby eliminating human will as a healing factor.
Coueism, on the other hand, teaches control of the body through the action of the human will alone. It makes no appeal to God as the Healer, but teaches through hypnotic methods the control of the body. It is generally known that human will is an enemy to the human race. It causes havoc and destruction in earthly experience, and because it is capable of all evil it can hardly be relied upon to save in the hour of need. It is generally conceded by all who are of an open mind that Christian Science cannot be identified with any healing work which is material in its method. Christian Science healing is an established fact in the world to-day. Thousands are gratefully testifying that they can safely use the method employed by Jesus in his healing ministry. The prayer of understanding has not lost its efficacy.
