Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication for the Year Ended September 30, 1924

During the past year there appeared in the secular press in our state only three adverse criticisms, two of which—extracts from sermons by evangelists—were reported. In each instance corrective replies were published. A number of other sermons attacking Christian Science were delivered throughout the state, but these were not reported in the press. Mention should be made of a growing spirit of tolerance toward Christian Science in Alabama. Especially is this evidenced in the secular press. Monitor editorials have been reproduced, and in several instances newspapers have praised its high standard and ideals. From time to time newspapers containing adverse criticisms, which were printed in other states and circulated in Alabama, have been sent to this office. In such instances they have been forwarded to the committees in the respective states for attention.

The attitude of the press has been uniformly courteous and friendly during the past year. Attacks appearing in the newspapers were fewer than the previous year, and in each instance our corrections were printed by the publishers, who gave us headings and prominence in their respective papers equal to those given the articles of attack. This shows unmistakably a willingness on the part of the editors to be fair to Christian Science. Some of the leading dailies of this state have favorably commented upon the Monitor, and in several instances have reprinted editorials and other articles from it. Such incidents are proof to the public that The Christian Science Monitor is a daily newspaper championing those things which tend to enlighten, uplift, and benefit mankind.

The growth of Christian Science in Florida during the past year is evidenced in many ways. A Christian Science Society has been organized at Delray. Christian Science Societies of Bradentown, Clearwater, Vero, and Winter Haven have been recognized as First Churches of Christ, Scientist. First Church of Christ, Scientist, Miami, is now occupying the Sunday school room of its new edifice.
