"What is truth?"

"Truth is God's remedy for error of every kind." Thus writes Mrs. Eddy on pages 142 and 143 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science. This simple statement is most significant. Since "truth is God's remedy for error of every kind," it must be all-sufficient; and no other remedy is necessary. Moreover, it must be universal and available to all mankind, and capable of being understood and demonstrated. Hence the Master's answer to Pilate's question, "What is truth?" is of vital importance to the human family and should be clearly understood by all. If mortals were conscious of the fact that a knowledge of Truth would enable them to overcome sickness and all discord, they would doubtless be more diligent in their efforts to ascertain the answer to this momentous question. In harmony with Mrs. Eddy's remarkable statement is the Saviour's explicit promise, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Nothing more important than the finding of this truth will ever challenge the attention of mankind.

Christian Science declares that, in reality, there is nothing outside of God and His creation. Therefore, to know God and what He creates is to know all there is of truth; for there can be no truth in that which does not exist. In harmony with the Scriptures, Christian Science further teaches that God is Spirit, and that His creation is spiritual, reflecting Himself. The spiritual universe, including man "in his own image," is the true creation. God's universe is spiritual and perfect; and the real man, reflecting the attributes of Deity, is also perfect and immortal. In this spiritual creation peace and harmony are universal, since therein is no imperfection.

There, then, is the answer to Pilate's question. And the understanding of these spiritual truths, together with the prayerful application of them in our daily lives, is the complete and perfect remedy for sickness, sin, and error of every kind, which can have no reality, since God's creation is the only one and reflects Himself. Reasoning from this basis we are led irresistibly to the conclusion that ignorance of spiritual Truth, and consequent erroneous, sinful thinking, are the source of all suffering and of all discord.
