In the year 1909, my father's death brought unspeakable sorrow to us. In 1911, my beloved mother also passed on. With her death every joy in life and every ray of hope seemed to vanish from me. Nothing could console me. I wandered in deepest darkness. To this mental sorrow was added heart trouble, which held me in hard fetters for ten years. Fearful spasms of the heart, after which I often had to lie in a very weakened condition for a week or even a month, made my life a torment. Numerous nights, spent in tears, I struggled to find help and consolation. During each medical treatment I felt that it could not help me to a permanent cure; but I always set my trust again on God. He has answered my cry; for "whoever relies on God, his hope stands firm as a rock." Broken in body and spirit, I was led by the almighty God to Christian Science.
On Christmas of 1921, I had a severe attack of influenza, accompanied by inflammation of the ear. I went to a doctor until the middle of February. This resulted again in a weak condition of the heart, and I stood once more on the verge of a complete breakdown. I visited a Christian Science Wednesday evening testimony meeting, which gave me so much strength and courage that I went the next day to a loving practitioner and asked for treatment. I listened to her words, whereby she made the truth clear to me, and did my best to get an understanding of this wonderful teaching. God blessed my search after the truth. After the first visit to the practitioner there was no immediate improvement, but two weeks later I noticed that I was daily becoming better and quieter. All difficulties which were manifested became milder, and soon disappeared completely. I was calmer and more hopeful; for I surely knew that I stood under God's almighty protection, and felt that suffering could no more enslave me, as it had up to this time. My earnest endeavor was to work out of matter, and to take to heart the words of Christ Jesus, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
I cannot be grateful enough for the many blessings which our almighty Father has already bestowed upon me in His endless goodness. My consciousness is no longer darkened; I have become joyful, and can enjoy nature by taking walks, something I could not do for ten years. In the summer of 1922 I even enjoyed an excursion to the Harz Mountains. The climbing in the mountains was not at all difficult for me.
