[Original testimonies in German]
I heard of Christian Science for the first time in 1906,...
I heard of Christian Science for the first time in 1906, and felt at once drawn towards this harmonious teaching. At that time the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, had not been translated into the German language, and I did not know English; but through my honest desire to understand Christian Science, I learned the English language with ease, whereas before it had seemed very difficult. Soon I also experienced the healing efficacy of Christian Science. Through daily study of the textbook I was freed from chronic headaches and colds.
In 1911 my husband and I moved to Berlin, where we became members of First Church of Christ, Scientist. The impressions which I received as a member of this church have proved to be very valuable; for when I became seriously ill in August, 1912, I was sufficiently strengthened spiritually to know that I could meet the test only by looking upon the sickness as a problem to be worked out in Science. I turned to a Christian Science practitioner, and received loving help for three months. During that time the condition improved considerably, for on the first of November I was able to attend a Christian Science lecture; and two days later I was able, for the first time, to go upstairs without help.
In December of that year I went to my relatives, who were anxious to care for me. At the urgent request of these relatives, who knew nothing of Christian Science, I consented to an examination by a doctor. He diagnosed the trouble as the worst form of rheumatism in the joints, and recommended a new medicine from which he expected good results, especially since up to that time I had not taken any medicine. The doctor explained in such a natural way the effect this medicine would have upon me that there ensued quite a struggle within me. The flattering voice of material sense whispered in my ear, Take it; they mean so well. But how grateful I am that God gave me the strength to withstand this temptation!
