For many years I was treated by many different doctors for a diseased condition of the lower part of my back, which interfered with my walking, and was very painful at times. I was employed as a traveling salesman, and found that I was not able to carry my grips without great difficulty. My overcoat, even, was a painful burden for me. I was told by a very kind physician that the climate of California would benefit me. After an X-ray photograph was taken of the spine and pelvic region, one physician advised my wife not to be discouraged, saying that the medical profession was constantly making new discoveries, and that possibly something would be found to benefit me. I gradually grew worse, until I was unable to walk. I was confined to my bed for nearly three years. For thirteen months I was unable to lie upon either side; and when I moved ever so little much suffering followed.

When I became bedfast I started earnestly to study the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and asked help from a very dear practitioner, whose kind and reassuring manner comforted me greatly. At this time I was in the city of Chicago, with my wife and little daughter, and was without funds. A very beautiful demonstration was made, however; and divine Love furnished shelter and food for us, proving that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," as our Leader tells us on page 494 of Science and Health.

Through the teachings of Christian Science I have been healed of a hernia, which I had for twenty-eight years. I have been healed of iritis, stomach and bowel trouble, protruding piles, and kidney trouble; have discontinued wearing glasses; and the appetite for strong drink has been overcome. The cigarette habit, which I had tried repeatedly to overcome because it was affecting my lungs, has been destroyed; also gambling and profanity. I have just started walking to church, and am gaining rapidly. Many evil tendencies, such as hatred, resentment, and envy, are being overcome, and are being supplanted by love, kindness, humility; and greater consideration for all mankind is being manifested.
