Among the Churches

Current Notes

Lancaster, Pa. —In reply to a question inquiring how the members of the Christian Science faith finance the building of a church, the following interesting answer was received:—

The discovery of the Science of Christianity has made all the good promises of God available to mankind on fulfilling the conditions upon which the promises are based. Its law was rediscovered by Mrs. Eddy in 1866 through her healing. Feeling sure that this healing took place through the operation of some law of God not generally understood, but which, if understood, would be of infinite blessing to mankind, she studied the Scriptures, applied the knowledge of God's ever-presence to heal, to bless, and to save, as revealed to her through this experience, and persevered until the rules were thoroughly established by demonstration. Then she gave this knowledge to the world in her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." In its Preface (p. x) she writes, "The divine Principle of healing is proved in the personal experience of any sincere seeker of Truth."

She offered her discovery freely to the churches, but they were not ready to welcome this stranger at that time; so it was necessary for her to organize a church to commemorate the words and works of Jesus, at the same time making the following prophecy: "If the lives of Christian Scientists attest their fidelity to Truth, I predict that in the twentieth century every Christian church in our land, and a few in far-off lands, will approximate the understanding of Christian Science sufficiently to heal the sick in his name" (Pulpit and Press, p. 22). The agitation of this question so strongly in the churches would indicate that we are approaching its fulfillment.
