Surrounded, as it were, by a wall of material obstacles...

Surrounded, as it were, by a wall of material obstacles so completely as to be debarred from progressing in any direction, and while searching for an opening through which I might see the light and my ultimate escape from the limitation of such confinement, a friend, seeing my great need, asked if I had ever tried Christian Science. It was as if I had looked up for the first time and found that the prison walls supported no roof at all and that above me was the light of the open firmament, broad and free. The name of a practitioner was handed to me, and through her help I was soon led to see that looking to the light, to the only power, God, was my only way of escape from the belief in a suppositional opposite power which claimed to build walls of confinement to hamper the right activity of a child of God. As I began to put into practice my understanding of this great truth the wall began to crumble. A condition of debt was met by selling all, or most of my cherished possessions, which I now did joyously. I had been out of work for months and was unable to get into the army on account of the condition of my lungs.

After squaring myself with the world, there were days when a touch of the old depression would try to return, when I did not know where the next meal was coming from, but I was hungrily devouring the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the need was always met, even though it took the last farthing and called for pawning the last trinket. Then came that great day when the tide turned and I received a letter from an out-of-town business man to whom I had written some weeks before, in which he asked me to meet him the next day. There was a position for me, though it was in another city, and it was a new line of work and couldn't be started for two weeks. However, this gave me faith and hope to work on, and before the two weeks were up my induction papers into the army, for "limited service," came and I went to camp and was placed in Class C, the lowest class accepted. After three months in camp, during which time I met and overcame influenza in three days' time, though not allowed to leave the infirmary for another three days, the armistice was signed. When I was being examined for discharge the doctor asked what had put me in "limited service." I told him the condition of my lungs and he said, "Why, that looks all right to me, but I'll call the specialist." The specialist made a careful examination and after consulting with one or two others said, "That condition is entirely healed. Change this man's papers and put him in Class A-1 for general military service."

With these experiences fresh in mind the problem of getting back into business was taken up with a great deal of confidence, knowing as I did that I had a rule the Principle of which was as exact as that of mathematics, and when intelligently applied to any problem the answer would be correct. After many vicissitudes in which further muchneeded lessons in humility were gratefully learned, the opportunity for a business connection superior to any I had previously held opened up and with it an opportunity for service and growth which I am daily more and more grateful for.
