Many years ago when I first learned of Christian Science,...
Many years ago when I first learned of Christian Science, through some of the literature kindly lent to me by a Christian Scientist who was visiting in the neighborhood where I then resided, I was in the concluding stage of a long train of bowel and stomach troubles. I consulted one of the Journals for the address of the nearest practitioner, to whom I wrote for help, and the result in changed physical conditions was miraculous and almost instantaneous. One morning I felt able to work and I hitched up the team and harrowed land all day. Previously I had not been able to do any work for weeks nor to walk, except short distances, without great difficulty. The food I could eat or assimilate had been restricted to the vanishing point. Now I ate everything I wished, and enjoyed it. Constipation of twenty years' standing was permanently healed. I later bought the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the Quarterly, and through the study of the Lesson-Sermons the journey spiritward began,—for victory over all ills is not won in a moment. As I progressed I learned that not only a few, but every angle of experience that Christian Science touches is transformed into a marvel of light and glory. In my experience on a farm, the realization of the perfection of God's creation has repeatedly delivered the animals when suddenly attacked with fatal disease.
I also acknowledge heartfelt thankfulness for my healing of influenza and pneumonia, and for the speedy deliverance of our baby girl last winter from the symptoms of pneumonia, also for the instantaneous healing of her broken arm. When I met the lady who later became my wife she had "suffered many things of many physicians and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse," with distressing hospital experiences, including two operations and prolonged medication. Through my presentation of Christian Science to her, she became interested, bought a copy of our textbook and the Quarterly and took up the study of Christian Science. Later she had treatment from a practitioner and her physical being was transformed; from a mere skeleton weighing but ninety pounds she increased in weight to one hundred and fifty-seven pounds. Our little girl, whose birth was attended by the ministrations of Christian Science, has never had a drop of medicine or any material remedies, and is a hearty, healthy child expressing intelligence to a remarkable degree.
Space forbids the enumeration here of all the blessings received. If all were written it would make a veritable book of blessings. I will tell one more of the many healings that pour into my thought. One winter I had taken cold and was suffering from incipient pneumonia and an aching tooth, in which was a large cavity. This double attack, each with its toll of pain, seemed unbearable. I wrote to a practitioner for help and very soon the toothache was gone and pneumonia had vanished into its native nothingness. When I examined the tooth no cavity could be found. In reading the testimonies in the Sentinel I have often been healed of a discordant physical condition. I hope that these expressions of gratitude may prove helpful, and in a measure atone for the error of long silence. I conclude with thanks to God and gratitude to our Leader for the many channels through which the blessings of Christian Science flow.
