In the Bible we read, "He sent his word, and healed them," and also, "The word of God is quick, and powerful." Most Christian Scientists have proved this healing by the word, the power of God, through the understanding gained in their study of the Bible and the Christian Science literature, which teach us that God is the great Physician, the only healer and savior of men.
When quite a young student and far from any practitioner or other Christian Scientist, I awoke one morning feeling very ill indeed. When I tried to get up, everything seemed to swim before my eyes and I felt so sick and faint that I had to get back into bed. It seemed particularly unfortunate to me, because I had promised to attend an important social function that day and, like many young students, I fancied that Christian Science depended on me to prove it. I dreaded the ridicule I thought I might bring on the cause, which even then I loved so well, by admitting that I was too ill to go out. I did not take any medicine or stimulants because I had lost all faith in material remedies and also it was against the teaching of Christian Science to do so. There was no one at hand to help me and for a little while I was in despair; then, as I lay there, there came to me the words from page 494 of Science and Health, so well known and loved by all students of that wonderful book: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."
As I kept repeating them I thought that surely divine Love would meet my need; and it was met, for in a few minutes I was able to get my book and read and in about half an hour I arose and had my breakfast. Later I went to the social gathering, which lasted several hours, no one there knowing I had felt ill, for by that time I was quite well.
