I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing;...
I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing; but after the passing out of a dear son through an accident I experienced an intense sense of loss which it seemed impossible to overcome. I tried reading the Bible, also going to church,—both of these privileges an exceedingly busy life had taken me completely away from,—but strange as it seemed to me then, the only result was that I sank deeper into the depths, which left me very rebellious. Then Christian Science was offered to me and I began to study it. The first thing I was able to grasp was Mrs. Eddy's statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 503), "Infinite space is peopled with God's ideas, reflecting Him in countless spiritual forms." That was a very great comfort to me, and brought a taste of the peace which passes human understanding.
At that time I was in a position which had grown most distasteful to me and which there seemed to be no way out of, as it appeared to be our only source of supply. I was told that when I took a step for the right the way would open, and it so worked out. Everything cleared up beautifully, and I have been enabled to put that experience behind me as a bad dream. Of physical healings my husband, my children, and myself have experienced many,—toothache, severe colds, acute indigestion, hemorrhoids which caused intense suffering, and a very severe attack of neuritis having been overcome.
In July, 1917, my then eight-year-old boy fell from a tree and broke his arm. When we called a doctor he declared that one bone in the forearm was broken, and the other so badly fractured that it would be necessary to complete the break in order to set the arm properly. This was done; then the physician, who was also an acquaintance, came to me and in strongest terms advised that there should be an X-ray taken, as the break was a very bad one, and he would not be responsible if his advice was not followed. He knew I was a student of Christian Science, and I was then in the home of a practitioner, who had taken up mental work for the boy immediately. This lady told him that he need not be disturbed, for we knew the work was done. The first dressing was not changed, and when at the end of five weeks it was removed, the arm was found perfect. The child had suffered no inconvenience whatsoever.
