The Lectures

London, England (First Church).—John Sidney Braithwaite, lecturer; introduced by Chaplain R. J. Davis, U.S.N., who said in part:—

After four years of untold suffering, fearful turmoil, and the chaos of war there is in the hearts of men, as never before, a longing really to know God—a yearning for a satisfying concept of religion that will sustain and help nations and individuals alike. Men are asking themselves of what use are the armaments of navies and the munitions of armies if back of these there is not the sword of Spirit, which is the sword of God? To the thinker, yes, and to the man in the street, the realization is daily becoming clearer that Armageddon is primarliy mental, a war of ideals, and that, as Paul puts it, "we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world," and "the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty throgh God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."
