The Motherhood of Being
On page 517 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "In divine Science, we have not as much authority for considering God masculine, as we have for considering Him feminine, for Love imparts the clearest idea of Deity." Again we read, on page 508 of the same book: "The Mind or intelligence of production names the female gender last in the ascending order of creation."
It is time that the attempt to deprive God of feminine attributes should cease. Is Deity incomplete that it should be confined to mere masculinity? Is the allness of God a misapprehension? Is the Supreme Being inadequate or insufficient? Whence comes this offense against God, this attack upon the divine integrity? Shall male domination under the cloak of religion be permitted to belittle Deity, to reproach the infinite creator, to derogate from the power of the First Cause, to limit "the Holy One of Israel," and thus wantonly and maliciously seek to rob man of the love of God? Christian Science has definitely and finally implanted the understanding of the motherhood of Being in human consciousness.
The Scriptures declare, "Male and female created he them." From this every thinker recognizes at once that feminine as well as masculine attributes must be in the divine Mind, else how could God create them. Everybody knows this to be true, and resistance to this truth constitutes a libel on God and should bring to judgment the written, printed, and published doctrines which thus slander God. It is this one-sided, irreverent concept of God which has permitted hypnotism to call upon God as its god, to terrorize the world with a fictitious male supremacy; but Christian Science sounds the doom of this perversion. The motherhood of God alone can dethrone hypnotism from its pretended right to sit in the seat of authority. The motherhood of Being understood proves the futility of necromancy, because Love alone gives the spiritual understanding which can sweep away the subtle complexities of evil intent. The world cannot be saved by belief in an imperfect God. To continue to support such a travesty upon Deity by creed and dogma is to deliver the world over to animal magnetism and carnage. Let the motherhood of God be preached, and this truth practiced. Not till then can the task of saving the world be accomplished.
