Many years ago an eminent medical man told me that I was beyond all human aid. Other physicians, including friends, examined me and independently of one another arrived at the same conclusion, that I was a mental and physical wreck. Among the many ailments were said to be valvular disease and enlargement of the heart in an advanced form, causing malformation of the chest bone, together with the usual accompaniments of extreme nervousness, irritability of temper, sensitiveness, chronic stomach disorder, an internal displacement, varicocele, and functional trouble of a serious nature, also the early stages of paralysis on one side.
As anticipated by the medical men, my eyes began to fail, and my nights were sleepless, until at last the strongest opiates were of no avail. My circumstances were such that I had to follow my employment, and so I determined to disappear when unable to continue it. Relief was sought in a variety of ways, some of which were extremely drastic. As I was not religiously inclined, all hope or desire for God vanished, and when I tried to read the Bible for a short time it was found to be anything but helpful; in short, I became an agnostic. My father and grandfather having passed on at an early age from the same physical causes, according to the so-called law of heredity which my condition seemed to manifest it is probable I also should have passed away, as predicted, very early, if Christian Science had not come beautifully into my life.
At the time I did not think of healing, but the teaching appealed to my intellect; and I refused all offers of help which were made to me, with the result that I studied the letter of Christian Science twelve months without the slightest improvement. I then became desperate and appealed to a practitioner for treatment. The healing came practically instantaneously, and I began to feel like the man who sat at the feet of Jesus "clothed, and in his right mind." Self-will and self-love are vanishing, and each day is bringing blessings untold, while the Bible has become my constant companion. Several years have now passed, and I have not had the slightest return of the above mentioned troubles.
