Divine Protection

As a conductor in the employ of an electric railway company, I have had many opportunities to prove the truths of Christian Science. The prevention of accidents to our passengers is a duty of first importance, and "Safety first" is our motto. Our officials caution us in this way: "Be sure your course is clear before you act." "Don't take chances." "Observe the rules." While the advice is important and is usually heeded, accidents still seem to occur, even when all the rules have been obeyed.

This only goes to show how finite are the laws of mortal mind. In Science and Health (p. 424) Mrs. Eddy says, "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony." By acknowledging this statement as a fundamental fact, and by dropping the mortal beliefs concerning accidents, I have been able in my work to realize and demonstrate to a degree this wonderful truth.

One day last summer, while on duty, a sense of impending accident came to me,—a picture of two cars colliding. The picture presented was so vivid that the terrible crash appeared as real as if the collision had indeed taken place. This ended my mental experience, for as I remembered Mrs. Eddy's words, "Stand porter at the door of thought" (Science and Health, p. 392), I knew that such a mortal suggestion should not be entertained, and then I saw that I should hold firmly to the fact that divine Mind governs, and that man is always under God's government. Although an accident would seem unavoidable under the conditions suggested, I knew that God governs all, and that He is ever-present intelligence. By meeting this suggestion of mortal discord with the spiritual facts, the truths of Christian Science, it was shown to me how such an accident was preventable. Several hours later the worth of this revelation was proven to me, and I am indeed grateful.
