Christian Science came into my life when I was in extreme...
Christian Science came into my life when I was in extreme need of help physically and mentally. I was on the verge of delirium tremens when a friend mentioned Christian Science to me, and while not clear mentally, I was nevertheless aware of my great need of help, so decided to try it as a last resort. During twenty years of slavery to drink I gradually acquired the use of a dangerous drug, which I took hypodermically when whisky seemed too weak to satisfy the craving for stimulants. When I started on my first visit to the Christian Science practitioner I was worse than drunk, but I was healed in five treatments of both the liquor and the drug habit, and there has been no desire for stimulants of any kind since. I was healed at the same time of the cigarette habit, although I had previously smoked to excess.
Few people go deeper into misery than I went as a result of drink; friends, positions, everything that is said to make up the sum of life's happiness, left me, and Christian Science found me cynical, pessimistic, and lonely. Everything is different now, for I live a better, larger life. If happiness consists in praising God constantly and possessing that peace which passeth understanding, in the ability to look out on the world no longer as a pessimist but as a genuine optimist, then I am happy. The drunkard's home with all its misery has been transformed into a home where the Bible is read every day and Christ is the head of the house, and this transformation was brought about entirely through Christian Science.
Words fail me when I try to say how grateful I am for this change. I thank God that I was led to read Mrs. Eddy's wonderful book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."—James Lawrence, Chicago, Ill.
