Christian Science was first brought to my attention in...

Christian Science was first brought to my attention in 1896, when my wife's mother was healed of an abnormal growth. About three years later, while stooping to examine some flowers, she punctured one of her eyes by striking it against a stick which held the flower upright. The injury was healed and her sight completely restored in less than a week. My wife, after being an invalid for years, had taken up the study of Christian Science and had been greatly benefited in both health and disposition. My boy, who was born with a double hernia and at five years of age had worn out four retaining bands, was healed in one night. These healings so impressed me that I determined to look into the merits of Christian Science for myself. Some time after taking up this study I discovered that for several years I had escaped the attacks of influenza which formerly had given me quite a tussle every spring and fall.

Some years ago a small spot appeared on the little finger of my left hand. At first I did not pay any attention to it, but the trouble spread rapidly until finally it covered both arms above the elbows and both legs above the knees. Different practitioners treated me during the three and a half years that I was in this state, but while they helped me greatly, the healing was not completed. At times I allowed myself to be very much discouraged, as my position compelled me to meet a good many people and some of them wanted to know why I always wore gloves. The thought was constantly with me that this work of overcoming the error was mine, and as time went on it became more and more insistent. My wife often tried to make me see that so long as I used any material means for relief I was not leaning upon God, and she lovingly told me that she did not think I would ever be healed until I put all my trust in Him.

One day the conviction came to me very forcefully that God needed no assistance from any source. I discontinued putting anything on my hands to keep them soft, put on gloves that were dry, and held fast to the truth as taught in Christian Science. For three days my suffering was terrible, but whenever it seemed unbearable I communed with God, placing myself absolutely in His care. After the third day my arms and hands were not so red, and from that time on I could almost see the error fade away. My arms and legs became whiter every day, and within a month hardly any traces of the disease were left, although it took almost a year for the finger-nails to grow into their rightful shape.
