The Lectures

Clarence W. Chadwick delivered two lectures on Christian Science for Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist. At the first lecture the introduction by Louis A. Heller was in part as follows:—

While one informed upon the subject finds it difficult to understand how anybody could fall into the error of believing that the primary object of Christian Science is the healing of bodily ills, yet there is nothing which makes a stronger appeal to the one "without God in the world" than the words of the master Christian, addressed to the impotent man at the pool of Bethesda,—"Wilt thou be made whole?" The answer, "Sir, I have no man ... to put me into the pool," would seem to indicate that then, as now, there was great need to reveal to mankind the truth that health or wholeness is something vastly more than mere physical well-being; that health cannot be separated from holiness, that freedom from suffering comes with freedom from sin, and that to win that freedom is to enter into the "glorious liberty of the children of God."
