We read and hear of so many cases of quick healing in Christian Science, that a sense of discouragement often tempts those whose healing is slow. That is one reason why I desire to give my testimony, the other reason being the pleasure I take in publicly expressing my gratitude to Christian Science for all it has done for me during the past sixteen years.
I was persuaded to try Christian Science through the healing of a dear friend. At that time I was in very poor health, longing to die, for I thought I would then find release from my suffering. Our family physician and an eminent specialist had done all they could for me, but I was growing worse. I had nervous trouble in many forms, and was not able to lift my hand above my head or take a quick step. I had so much fear of everything that my life became a dreadful nightmare. Severe headaches would cause me to stay in bed for two days at a time; then I had other serious ailments, and such trouble with my eyes that I could not read more than one page at a time, and never after dark, without pain.
Christian Science found me in this condition, and I consented to see a practitioner on the recommendation of my friend. At first I would not permit the practitioner to talk to me about this teaching, and I refused to read Science and Health; but after my first treatment I asked him how often I would have to come to his office. He replied, "You had better come every day this week." It seemed a long time to me, for immediately many material demands seemed to claim my time; but I resisted them with the thought that as I had started, I would be as faithful to Christian Science as I had been to the doctors. Then the fault would not be mine when it failed, for I was sure it was going to fail in my case.
