The deep sense of gratitude that I feel for Christian Science...
The deep sense of gratitude that I feel for Christian Science is beyond words to express. I had never been strong physically, and the last few years my condition was deemed serious. In 1906 we went to Denver, in the hope that the climate would improve my health, but in September, 1908, I was confined to my bed, it seemed to me for the last time, when my sister came to see me and advised me to have Christian Science treatment, as I had tried everything else. She knew nothing of this teaching herself, but had recently heard of a case of healing.
After she came, I waited a few minutes for some one to make an effort toward getting Science help for me, but every one was silent. Then I told them if they were going to do anything, it would have to be done soon, for I was getting very weak. My husband went to the telephone and called up First Church, then came and told me the conversation he had had with the one who answered his call. He had told the one in attendance that his wife was very sick and wanted to try Science, so he would like to know if it could do her any good, and the answer was, "Yes, it can." A practitioner's address and telephone number were given my husband, who then tried to call up the lady. He was given the wrong line, and thought it useless wasting any more money telephoning for Science treatment, so he did not try to call the second time. Seemingly he was very much discouraged, but I was not. A great weight was being lifted, and in about twenty minutes. I rose and walked into the front room and sat down. My husband watched me closely, but did not say anything. This occurred on a Wednesday afternoon about three o'clock. A little later I began attending to my household duties, and reamined up after that. I did not know how this healing had been done; I only knew it was through Christian Science The following Tuesday I went to see the practitioner, when I learned I had found the truth in Science, and that it was through the simple desire for truth that I had been raised from the seemingly serious illness a few days previous.
This first experience in Christian Science has been a day-star before me always. The practitioner told me among other beautiful things, that we read in the first chapter of Genesis that God made all things good; that He made man in His image and likeness, and gave him dominion. She said that sickness is not good, and to be sick is not to be like God. The truth dawned upon me so clearly that it seemed I was just beginning to comprehend life. She told me to get a copy of Science and Health and read it, and I would be all right; but I insisted on having treatment. I took five or six treatments, and in the mean time got Science and Health. Through the study and application of its teachings, I needed no more help. The ailments of which I was healed were what the doctors had called serious stomach disorder, abnormal condition of one kidney, which, according to materia medica, only an operation would relieve, nervous trouble that caused paralysis of the right arm at times and affected the left arm and both limbs, also weak lungs, two of my family having passed on from lung trouble. I told the practitioner only about the fear of this last-named disease, and of a minor complaint which had given quite a little trouble. The other ills were all forgotten, and when I say forgotten I mean all the word implies. It seemed as if they never happened, and spiritually I know they never did.
