When I take a retrospective view of the past five years,...
When I take a retrospective view of the past five years, I feel it is time to give to the world a brief account of the joy and peace which the study of Christian Science brings into my life daily. It was when suddenly plunged into the depths of woe that I learned through this teaching how to place reliance on God here and now. It was then that this panacea for all the world's evil, the healing truth of Christian Science, rediscovered by our noble and revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, was gently presented to me by a now dear friend, who was then merely an acquaintance.
Early and late I pondered Science and Health, which I found at all times a veritable "Key to the Scriptures." Almost immediately the passage, "Take no thought for your life," commented upon on page 228 of our text-book, was so unlocked that a chronic internal disorder, from which I had suffered acutely for many years, disappeared entirely from consciousness, being washed away, as it were, by the inpour of Truth "though flood-tides of Love" (Science and Health, p. 201). For years I had tried many material remedies for this malady, had been a strict vegetarian for two years, and upon medical advice had taken a course of medicinal waters, etc., but all to no purpose. Finally I concluded that nothing could give me permanent relief.
"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," adorns the wall of our church building, and this promise of Jesus, brought strikingly and understandingly to my notice through Mrs. Eddy's emphatic teaching that "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (Science and Health, p. 468), has been fully exemplified in my case, for I am no longer in bondage to that tyrannizing belief. During the past five years I have not needed any material remedy whatever, and for this freedom I cannot express the gratitude I feel. Many other Bible promises have been proven true since taking up this study, and they were my counselor and comforter during a great trial. No earthly friend was near, and I had indeed to "place on the Lord reliance." I stood then alone with God, and I bless Mrs. Eddy more and more when I think of the inner comfort and strength her inspiring words gave me in that darkest hour.
