[Written for the Sentinel]

The Healer

To him who failed, one came in duty stern,
Reproaching and admonishing by turn,
And swift resentment caused thereby to burn.

Another with fierce scorn the victim flayed,
Utterly flouting each excuse he made,
Leaving him trembling, self-condemned, dismayed.

A third, indignant, ardently expressed
An overwhelming sympathy, distressed—
Self-pity injured whom he would have blessed.

One came before whose thought the error fled.
"It was a lie, my friend," he calmly said,
"Live now, and 'let the dead past bury its dead!'"
