We read that when Jesus "had made a scourge of small cords," he drove out of the temple certain buyers and sellers who were contaminating it. We are often very quick to grasp the thought that we must purge our home and surroundings of anything that we can define as sinful or evil in any shape or form, and our first thought turns instinctively to those errors which to our material senses seem most in evidence. These may be in our own home or our personal surroundings, appearing in the form of evil habits or faulty dispositions in ourselves or family. We long to see these errors corrected, and disappear. Then, realizing that the home must be kept pure, we perhaps firmly but lovingly insist that an evil to which we are fully awake be kept out of it, and strive to bring this desire into effect. The thought then comes to us that we have taken a right and forward step, and this brings a sense of satisfaction in that we have acted according to our highest sense of right.
Just here is where we need to be even more watchful and alert, for error is no sooner defeated on one point than it attacks with renewed energy from a wholly unexpected quarter, and seeks a foothold with such persistence that we are apt to feel overwhelmed, and cry out that we have so much to meet. Here we should take another step in our understanding that God is ever present, present at any moment in any place. This leads us to see that it is our own consciousness which needs to be purged, until in the clear, pure light of divine Love, we see all error for what it is, namely, a lie. Whether it presents itself to our physical senses or mentally, it is solely a lie, a false belief, and when recognized as such and resisted, it cannot cause us to feel either resentment or fear in any form, for it is driven out of the temple, and we shall not see it either in our home or in our surroundings.
