My attention has just been called to a communication...

New Haven (Conn.) Times-Leader

My attention has just been called to a communication which appeared in a recent issue, wherein the writer, after enumerating some twenty-five or more diseases which he terms "parasite diseases," asks whether such "are a proper field for Christian Science practise." The best answer to this question is the fact that all the diseases mentioned have been healed repeatedly through Christian Science. The evidence of this is on every hand, for at the present day there is hardly a hamlet in which cannot be found those who stand as living testimonies to the efficacy of Christian Science to heal all these types of disease.

With respect to the list of ailments mentioned, the communication further says, "An abundance of conclusive experiments has proved the named diseases to be due to parasites." Notwithstanding this statement, it is common knowledge that doctors do not all agree upon the causes of the diseases named, nor are they agreed as to the proper treatment of them. It is likewise well known that physicians do not always agree in their diagnosis of a case, and that many such cases are lost under medical treatment. It is becoming better understood that Christian Science is often effective in cases of this kind after materia medica has failed to bring the desired relief.

The dilemma which seems to appear to the writer of the communication, over the question, "If Life and God are synonymous terms, how can life in man nullify life in the parasite?" indicates a failure fully to apprehend the fact that Christian Science recognizes God as Spirit and man as spiritual, God's idea; that man as God's idea, or as the Scriptures state it, His image and likeness, reflects and expresses God, His qualities and attributes. It must follow, then, that in so far as we understand and realize this basic truth concerning man's relationship to his creator, we are able to partake of and manifest the divine nature or omnipotence, and thus the "dominion . . . over all the earth" conferred upon man, as recorded in the first chapter of Genesis, is demonstrated. The utilization of divine power is possible when man's birthright is understood.
