Christian Science came to me at a time when I was greatly...
Christian Science came to me at a time when I was greatly in need of help, and in my case man's extremity was truly God's opportunity. It was not for physical healing, however, that I took up the study of Christian Science, but the time had come when my faith in God no longer helped me to overcome worry, fear, and despondency, and I searched for a more practical, more helpful religion. This I truly found in Christian Science.
After studying the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, for a time, I soon found that all our troubles, whether physical or other, came from wrong thinking and a lack of understanding of man's relation to God. Many Bible passages which had lost their meaning for me, gained a new light through the understanding of Christian Science, and became a great help to me in my every-day life. In Proverbs we read, "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy path." I realized that I had not acknowledged God in all my ways, for when we are filled with fear and anxiety we are not doing this. The Bible further says that we should seek "first the kingdom of God," and that all needed things shall be added unto us. Not understanding the true meaning of the term "kingdom of God," I received no help from this. The kingdom of God, or kingdom of heaven, meant to me a place that we were to reach after death, but on page 590 of Science and Health it is defined as "the reign of harmony in divine Science." This statement enabled me to understand more fully Jesus' words, "The kingdom of God is within you."
There was no change in my surroundings or work after I took up the study of Christian Science, but with a changed thought and a clearer understanding of my relation to God, peace and happiness came to me. It takes time to gain spiritual understanding, but if we are faithful to divine Principle as taught in our text-book, we shall reach the promised land of health and peace.
