The mission of Christian Science has been to "reinstate...
Durango (Col.) Herald
The mission of Christian Science has been to "reinstate primitive Christianity" (Manual, p. 17), and in doing this it takes sharp issue with those established materialistic customs and observances which have deposited a "layer of idolatry" upon Christianity, and caused Christianity to lose the vital healing power so characteristic of its mission in the first three centuries. It is apparent to any one who is at all familiar with the teachings of Christian Science that our critic is woefully ignorant of what Christian Science really is and what it is accomplishing in the world. For instance, she scouts at the possibility of prayer healing the sick. No fact has been more clearly demonstrated during the past quarter of a century than that Christian Science has healed, and is now healing, all kinds of sickness through prayer; and so well has this been established that the denial of it only convicts the person who makes the denial of ignorance as to what Christian Science is accomplishing.
This critic asserts that the age of healing is past. Evidently this writer has overlooked Jesus' commands to his followers, in every age and clime, to heal the sick, and his further wonderful prophecy that his disciples would do greater works than he had done. With the loss of Christian healing about the beginning of the fourth century, when men could not account for the healing works of the early Christian, the theory of miracles was introduced. According to this theory, the healing work of Jesus and his apostles was miraculous, an intervention of divine Providence in the affairs of men, contravening natural law and setting it aside. The Bible gives no authority for such a theory, an assumption directly contrary to Jesus' teachings. Jesus taught that God is ever present and omnipotent, and that His healing power is ever available to those who call upon Him. To resuscitate this healing power and restore the purity of the primitive church has been the mission of Christian Science—a mission which has proved the correctness of its basis by innumerable healings of diseases in every civilized country of the globe.
