It is now seven years since Christian Science was first...
It is now seven years since Christian Science was first brought to my notice. It came to me in my darkest hour of need, when I seemed to stand alone without God, or in fact any one of whom I might ask aid. The God to whom I had looked for deliverance had seemingly failed me. I had gone to Denver, Col., with a dear one, hoping to find help for him; but after three years of toil, and suffering much of many physicians, I was then told there was no help,—that he was beyond earthly aid.
My state of mind may be imagined,—no God, no doctor who could help me, and seemingly no friend to whom I could turn. I was two thousand miles from home; but as I stood watching by the bedside of the sufferer in the lonely hours of the night, praying for help as I had never prayed before (though I believed I had prayed in the past), I asked for light and guidance. God heard my prayer, for with the morning He sent me the truest and best friend I had ever known. She brought the truth with her, the Christ-healing, and was indeed an angel of mercy, for when she came in I seemed to lose all sense of burden. She told us of Christian Science; but we did not have much faith in it, although I had heard of it for many years.
In my ignorance, like others, I had ridiculed what I then thought was Christian Science; but I listened to this lady through politeness. She asked the patient if he would like to have Christian Science treatment; and he, like myself, out of courtesy said "Yes," though he had no faith in it. This friend remained with him for an hour. Soon after that he was asleep, for the first time in twenty-four hours, and he slept peacefully throughout the night. The next morning he was up and out on the porch, with almost all of the dread disease, which was erysipelas, gone from his face. It had covered the entire right side, and the doctor had told me that if it reached his brain, it would mean certain death. This was the cause of my intense fear.
