Systematic Study

As all are supposed to know the value of system in the affairs of life, we should at once see the importance of it in the greatest of all affairs, that of gaining a better understanding of Truth. My own past method of studying our Christian Science literature was too unsystematic to satisfy me, and my desire for light on the subject was supplied by an article which appeared in one of our periodicals in 1910, in which the writer pointed out the advantage to be gained by reading all of our Leader's works at least once during each year. This impelled me to try to work it out, with the surprising result that by reading five pages each day, one can cover all of Mrs. Eddy's works in one year, an investment of time which is trifling as compared with the return of good it brings.

As Christian Scientists we should and do find our capacity for work increasing, but we must bear in mind, that to continue in well-doing, and to do the "greater works" which Christ Jesus assigned to us, we need daily to spiritualize our thought by the study of the Bible and the authoritative literature of Christian Science, especially Mrs. Eddy's writings, for which nothing else can be substituted.

Most Christian Scientists gratefully realize the need of reading our daily, weekly, and monthly publications which are doing so much to spiritualize the whole world's consciousness, but we must not let this displace the more important study of the works of the one who has made all the rest possible, because not only all that has been done, but all that remains yet to be accomplished, is and must be the result of a faithful adherence to and the practise of pure Christian Science as our Leader has stated it. Jesus said, "These ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." My own practise of a more systematic method of reading has proved such a profitable experience that I can heartily recommend it to others.
