Before Science and Health came to me, my faith in the...
Before Science and Health came to me, my faith in the promises of God, though they were not fully understood, sometimes brought peace, and as a girl I prayed for a brother whom our good doctors expected to pass away within seven hours. I was reminded of a passage of Scripture which destroyed my fear, and this brother was out of danger three hours after the time the doctors expected him to pass away. In another illness, however, some years later, my prayers failed to heal him. Then Christian Science was recommended to him, and he was healed, though not quickly, and became Mrs. Eddy's student.
My brother sent me a copy of Science and Health, and because I felt I owed it to him to read it, I did so, with the prayer that if it were error I might perceive it; but only a few pages were read before I was convinced that Christian Science is Bible teaching, and true. I threw away the medicine for my children that had accumulated, and began to apply what I read. I was quite well myself; my fear was mostly for them. I did not get enough understanding of Truth to overcome this fear altogether, but Science and Health has lightened my darkness and given me health all these years. After one of my children was taken from me, I opened the Bible for comfort, and the first words I saw were these from Jeremiah: "Thus saith the Lord; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears; for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the Lord; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy." Science is indeed the promised Comforter.
Not long after I began to read Science and Health, a carbuncle made its appearance, but no one knew of its presence. I slept as usual and performed my regular duties. An injury to my eye caused me no suffering until the third night, when I was awakened by severe pain. I remembered that hate has no power, that matter is not power, for it is not intelligent; that divine Love is all-power, and everywhere present. Relief came at once and was permanent.
