Peoria (Ill.) Star

As quoted in a recent issue, the Rev. J. M. Darnell describes a new church, of universal appeal, which he prophesies will some day be established among men, apparently disregarding the fact that such a church already exists. Had he more accurate knowledge of the nature and purpose of the Christian Science church, instead of decrying it and wishing for its downfall, he would recognize in it the fulfilment of his own expressed desire for a church of universal brotherhood declaring the universal fatherhood of God. This church was established by its Founder for the purpose of reinstating primitive Christianity, which includes the healing of the sick as well as the reform of the sinner, in the Christ way, through the power of God. That its mission is being faithfully performed, is attested by unnumbered thousands of grateful beneficiaries in all parts of the world; and it does not exclude the man with the "pick and shovel," as our critics say, but invites him freely to its services, where he is welcome to a seat that is provided for rich and poor alike, by the voluntary contributions of those who give cheerfully for this purpose, according to their several ability. It seems regrettable, therefore, that the Christian Science church should have been described as the church of the rich and exclusive, merely because its members generally have learned how to be well and prosperous, not at the expense of their neighbors, but because of an enlarged sense of the presence and beneficence of God.
