I first heard an intelligent explanation of Christian Science...
I first heard an intelligent explanation of Christian Science in December, 1888, through one of Mrs. Eddy's loyal students. Many times previous to that I had prayed, in my way, to be guided out of the mental condition which seemed about to overwhelm me, and my prayers were answered when Christian Science was thus presented.
With three young children to rear and educate, and small means at my disposal, I was deeply distressed and discouraged. On the verge of despair, I had said repeatedly that if this is life it is not worth the struggle, and but for my children I would not continue it. I had made up my mind that if a separation from these little ones should ever become necessary, I would take my chances, and theirs also, on another plane. In this state of mind I asked if Christian Science could do anything for one's mental condition. I said I had no physical ailments particularly to be gotten rid of; that my trouble was mental, and that I wanted a religion which would change my whole thought. Then the answer came, "We generally get what we work for." My physical ailments disappeared as the mental atmosphere was illumined, mainly through the study of the letter of Christian Science and by imbibing the spirit as far as I was capable.
Since 1888 I have not used material remedies of any kind, having found Christian Science to be the panacea for all ills, both physical and mental, for myself and others. I can only express by my life my appreciation of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy.—Mrs. Mary F. Gregory, Arkansas City, Kan.
