One of the really remarkable religious gatherings in this...
Peoria (III.) Journal
One of the really remarkable religious gatherings in this city was that at the Shrine Temple last Monday evening. The house was filled. The people had come there to hear Bicknell Young lecture on Christian Science. To one who watches modern movements at all, it is something wonderful to see so many people in this city turn out to a religious meeting that has in it none of those elements commonly called sensational. The announcements of this meeting which were published were the most circumspect articles, evidently written by some member of the church and printed in the papers in small type as advertisements. Had this been almost any other religious denomination, the newspapers would have been asked to write much of the stuff themselves, insert it every day for a long time in advance for nothing, and put it up in as catchy a style as possible. The same number of persons at an evangelistic service of any other church organization would have been considered quite remarkable. In most meetings of the kind conducted by any other church, an appeal would have been made for funds. There was nothing said about money in that meeting.
The lecture was a thoughtful deliverance by a man who knew his subject well-nigh perfectly and delivered his remarks in a pleasing manner. There was the assurance which is always found in the speech of one who believes absolutely in the system he is teaching. There were the same sweeping assertions which such teachers always make and offer no apology for the making of them. It was one of the cleanest-cut sermons ever listened to by a Peoria audience. There was no show of enthusiasm on the part of the audience during the delivery of the lecture. The people sat quiet, and there was almost perfect attention from first to last.
