It is now four years since I experienced a most wonderful healing through the truth as found in Christian Science. For ten years I had intermittently suffered, both day and night, with severe pains throughout my whole body. Everything possible was done, both by doctors and friends, to relieve my suffering, but all in vain. Operations followed at intervals, until they ended with a serious one, from which I seemed to rally slowly; but I so greatly desired to return to my much-loved work, which was that of a sister in the Wesleyan East End Mission, that I made an effort and returned at the end of seven months. The superintendent insisted that I should rest as much as possible. Nevertheless, with all the loving care which both doctor and minister gave, in a short time my sufferings became so intense that I finally went home to rest for a few weeks, then went to the sea, hoping the change would do me good; but I grew worse daily.

Our heavenly Father had, however, better things in store for me. Four days before I left the seaside, a lady came to stay at the house where I was, and the day after her arrival she began to talk to me about passages from the Bible. I soon felt that she had a higher revelation of Scriptural truth than I had, and that night, instead of taking medicine to get relief from pain, I read the Bible in this new-found light, and the result was that I went down to breakfast next morning well! Christ, Truth, had healed me! I returned home as already arranged, and the wonderment and surprise of my friends when they saw me, words cannot express, for two of them had been to see me the previous week and had taken word home that I was in a dying condition. I told those at home of the lady whom I had met, and that the light she had thrown on the Bible had healed me.

My mother, who had suffered more or less all her life with heart, kidney, and stomach troubles, and had hardly ever been without a doctor or drugs, at once accepted what I told her, and at any sign of pain we immediately began to declare the truth, with the result that soon medicine was no longer even thought of by either of us. We were very grateful for this healing, and I wrote to the lady who helped me, expressing our gratitude for the words she had spoken. She replied, that if I wanted to know more, I should go to the Christian Science reading-rooms in London and ask for the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. At the name of Christian Science I became frightened. Had I unknowingly been deceived and led away from God? But I reasoned with myself that my mother and I had been healed by believing the truth as found in the Bible and taught by Christ Jesus, and this made clear the light this lady said was to be found in the Christian Science text-book. I determined, however, that no book or people should separate me from the truth as found in the Bible, and with this thought I obtained a copy of Science and Health which I read secretly for a month. During this time my mother became aware that I was reading a new book, and finally I told her that the light which had brought our healing was to be found in a religion called Christian Science, and that this book which I was reading explained it all.
