[Written for the Sentinel]

An Autumn Musing

Each falling leaf proclaims a resurrection;
The fading flowers immortal blooms declare;
When understood, it is the heart's election
Of higher thought of nature's tints so fair.

The darkling cloud doth hint a bright tomorrow,
Despite of what false sense may seem to say;
The sighing wind that murmurs tones of sorrow
Is harbinger of some glad, holy lay.

And thus from things unseen we draw conclusions
Respecting things which only seem to be,
And turn our hearts away from earth's illusions
To learn life's lessons, blessed Christ, from thee.

O Love divine, our faltering footsteps strengthen
To hasten on from mortal sense to Soul,
Lest, while earth's shadows o'er our pathway lengthen,
We lose the way and miss the promised goal.

Thy word, Continue in my love, we treasure;
No other way Love's radiance will unfold;
But, watching every hour to do His pleasure,
Truth separates in us the dross from gold.
