To say that Mrs. Eddy claimed "divinity for the human...
Abilene (Kan.) Reflector
To say that Mrs. Eddy claimed "divinity for the human soul" is to misrepresent her teaching. One to be a true critic must be a master of the subject criticized. Christian Science is revealed truth. It is not something Mrs. Eddy has created or has a patent upon, nor does she make such a claim; she says it came to her "through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration" (Science and Health, p. 109). This spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures as imparted to the world through the teachings of Christian Science, reveals spiritual cause and effect as the true basis of all true reasoning; that God, Spirit, is the only creator.
The immortality of Soul declares that it has no place in the human concept of existence—that matter never becomes Spirit, or that immortality returns to dust. Soul is not a material something that helps to make up a corporeal body; Soul is God—infinite Spirit. Infinity proclaims its oneness—one Soul, one God; and we have Scriptural authority for declaring that man is the image and likeness of God; therefore the Soul of man is God, Life, Truth, and Love.
The works of Christ Jesus are called miracles not because they are violations of divine law, but because they seem miraculous to those who have no knowledge of the fact that Spirit being the source or basis of all existence, all creation must be governed by spiritual law,—the only law, for Spirit is one. Jesus' life and work proved this fact; his very being, his ministry, and his demonstrations were directly opposite to and silenced all physical or so-called natural law. All Christendom accepts Christ Jesus as the way of salvation. Then why should Christian Scientists be condemned for doing the same thing? Jesus' commands to "preach the gospel" and "heal the sick" are just as imperative now as they were the day they were uttered.
