The following testimony is given with the hope that some railroad man may see it and gain courage. I am forty-two years old and have been in this business for twenty years. I was completely broken in health when I found Christian Science over three years ago. The reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, healed me morally and physically. I commenced the reading in order to help my wife, as the practitioner said it would aid in her effort to gain health. Perhaps I would not have cared to read it if I had known it would work a change in me as well.
First, I noticed that I had quit swearing, then the tobacco habit left me. One day the tobacco tasted bad and made me sick. I changed pipes and tobacco, but it was of no use—the appetite was destroyed. I was afflicted with the lame back which all railroad men have more or less. I had partial paralysis of the right leg from the knee down, and the doctor said my only way to get relief from pain when riding on my engine was to have a block under the foot to lift the weight, but the only relief came through Christian Science. From childhood I had a bad case of catarrh and hay-fever; besides this I was operated on for piles but not cured, and when the disease returned I was entirely healed in three days through reading Science and Health. Reading-glasses were removed after three days treatment, and I can now read the Bible and Science and Health at any time. Many immoral tendencies also have been totally destroyed.
At first I could not understand how a fellow as bad as I could possibly receive so much benefit from God in Christian Science, as all the religion I had was the belief that there was a God. I never used to read the Bible, but now it is a pleasure to read and study the Lesson-Sermon daily. I had been baptized, and was in childhood admitted to the church to which my parents belonged; but I early drifted away from it, and it is now nearly fifteen years since I entered it except to attend funerals of friends. At the time I began to read Science and Health I was much reduced in weight, but I am now in good physical condition. With the exception of two occasions when a practitioner treated me, all my healing and reformation came through the reading of Science and Health. I know that my gratitude to God, also to the Leader of Christian Science, is proven every day in the effort to live right and help others.
