It is over three years since Christian Science was first...
It is over three years since Christian Science was first recommended to me as a healing agent, and it was only for healing that I at first turned to it. I thought I did not need religion, as I rather prided myself on being broad-minded, which meant in my case, as it does in many others, that I did not believe wholly in anything. I had my own views, which were a mixture of so-called new thought, spiritualism, theosophy, Darwinism and a few other isms, and for my physical help I relied wholly upon materia medica, physical culture, and breathing exercises. As to their practical value as a harmonizing influence in my life, my physical condition was most potent testimony. For years I had suffered with a bowel trouble, and with the advent of each new member into the family the condition was aggravated, until finally, after the birth of my third child, the suffering became unbearable, for it involved not only the local suffering but many complications. My physician could offer nothing for relief but opiates and other drugs, and he advised (as had three other physicians) an operation, which they all agreed was the only cure.
At this point a friend offered me the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," to read. I merely glanced at it and turned away from it contemptuously. Finally, however, I agreed to try the treatment, and in spite of the prejudice which I thought I entertained toward Christian Science, I was healed. The pain and inaction were cured in the first treatment and after about five weeks' treatment the hemorrhoids disappeared. Naturally, with such convincing proof that there was "something in it," I commenced to read Science and Health, and found that I was not opposed to what Christian Science is; I had only been opposed to what I thought it was, and investigation proved the error of my opinion. I have found this truth to be a "very present help in trouble"—all kinds of trouble—because it makes us realize the omnipresence of God, and know that God is for us.
In the first days of our acquaintance with Christian Science, before we had learned enough of its practical application to prevent discordant conditions, there were many experiences which required aid, but we have found Christian Science a sovereign remedy for all. Our children have been cured of fever, measles, croup, and minor ailments. My husband has been cured of chronic catarrh, a stomach difficulty, also of the tobacco habit, which he had many times tried in vain to overcome with will-power, Our financial condition has been changed from the darkest of experiences to prosperity, and best of all, we have found a church whose religion is a genuine help, a living, livable doctrine, which makes every blessed promise of the Bible a fact in our experience. We are learning what it means to have dominion over all things, which is just another way of saying that we are subject only to God. Our children, who were continually being made the victims of our intense efforts to be careful of their diet and raise them according to strictly hygienic rules of living, are now enjoying perfect health, with freedom to eat things which we formerly thought would endanger their lives.
