For many years I suffered from a peculiar and distressing nervous trouble. At first the symptoms were wholly mental. There was no physical evidence of disease, but as the years passed and no relief could be obtained, my bodily organs became gradually involved until, in December of 1899, there seemed to be a complete collapse. A physician who was treating me at that time said that every organ of the body was hopelessly diseased, and that further medical treatment was useless. He said that mortal man could not suffer as I was then suffering and live; that my brain was rapidly softening and that I could not live two weeks. Finally the day came when it seemed clear to all that the end was near, and it was at this time that my mother decided to try Christian Science. She knew that practically everything else had been tried to no purpose, and that I had reached the point where nothing could harm me. When the Christian Science practitioner arrived the delirium of death had begun to settle over me. Her treatment relieved the suffering somewhat, but my recovery was slow. However, I clung to Christian Science to the exclusion of all other therapeutic systems, and some idea of the practical results obtained may be gained from the fact that early in 1903 I was examined by a physician in the employ of a life insurance company, who pronounced me sound both mentally and physically.
I have overcome some immoral habits and many bodily infirmities, and I am grateful for the measure of Christianity that is mine.—
