George C. Martin of the geological department of John Hopkins University has been selected by the National Government to lead an expedition into Alaska for the purpose of making a minute investigation of its coal and oil fields. It is said the Government has information of great importance, not only to the Navy, but to the people of the United States. The expedition will also make explorations of comparatively unknown portions of the great peninsula and compile maps and secure geological specimens.
Dr. Martin will select the ablest geologists and coal and oil experts he can induce to join him. The expedition will start the middle of May, going direct to Seattle and thence by mail steamer to Kadiak, the old Russian capital.
The Honorable William H. Hunt, Governor of Porto Rico, whose recent appointment to succeed Judge Knowles as United States District Judge in Montana has been confirmed by the Senate, has been in Washington in conference on matters in Porto Rico and will soon return to the Island to settle affairs there, after which he will assume his seat on the Montana Bench.
