It is indeed a privilege to express in our periodicals some measure of my appreciation and gratitude for the benefits I have received through the knowledge of Christian Science. On a beautiful June morning about six years ago, I realized for the first time the healing power of the Christ, and after one treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, my weary, sick, and discouraged sense was replaced by a consciousness full of hope and confidence that God, whom I had ever loved and served, could and would heal me.
Throughout my childhood and girhood I had been a constant victim of ill health. The continuous efforts of some of the kindest, ablest physicians and specialists in my own city, had proved unavailing, and I was frankly told that the fundamental difficulty might never be removed. My school duties had been frequently interfered with, and finally, to my great disappointment, they were discontinued some months before commencement on account of my ill health. Constant throat trouble, abscesses, extreme nervousness, rheumatism, and severe attacks of fever, were among the diseases from which I suffered. I say "among the diseases," for there were many more. I seemed only relieved from one trouble, to be attacked by another.
Yet, as I look back upon these years spent in the wilderness, I can see how I was being led, slowly, surely, to the promised land, the "land of Christian Science, where fetters fall, and the rights of man are fully known and acknowledged" (Science and Health, p. 227).
