I became interested in Christian Science through a relative...
I became interested in Christian Science through a relative who loaned me some Sentinels and Journals. He had just taken class instruction, having heard of Christian Science through a Christian Scientist, an American who had married a friend of ours and come to live in our island home. After reading a few Sentinels and Journals, I became convinced that there was something in it, and borrowed Science and Health. I could not then understand it and soon returned the book. I continued to read the periodicals and became more interested. I soon tried Science and Health again, and also applied to an experienced practitioner for treatment. I had a long-standing physical ailment that had been treated unsuccessfully by two New York specialists, but through Christian Science I was healed in two weeks. I read Science and Health slowly, going over and over each paragraph until I gained a little understanding, and in 1902 I was privileged to have class instruction.
In the light of Christian Science my Bible has seemed different book. I has been a member of an orthodox church for some years and never could understand why the healing had been lost sight of. A few months after my return from class I had what was to me a wonderful demonstration. I had what seemed like rheumatism in my limbs and could not walk, sit, or lie down in any comfort or without pain. I had never been troubled with such an ailment before, and, being the only Christian Scientist in my family, I was advised to have a doctor. I refused, however, and concluded to help myself if possible, but was not sure that I had enough understanding. I went to Science and Health, read the chapter on "Christian Science Practice," and treated myself as well as I could. I went to bed, slept well, and have never had a return of the pain; in fact, I forgot all about it. A few months ago I was said to have the grip, and was obliged to remain in bed several days. I was again urged to have a physician, but I refused and tried to help myself and came through all right, while my sister, who had the same ailment, was ill several weeks with a doctor in attendance.
The Sentinels and Journals are a great help to me. Error seems to rise up on every side to confound me, but my daily prayer is for understanding; to be so conscious of the omnipotence of good that the seeming hindrances can have no place.—M. D. M., Nassau, N. P., Bahamas.
