It was not as a last resort, or because I had been a great sufferer that I turned to Christian Science.

Something over three years ago, while suffering from a very severe cold, one of the kind that held me in its grasp most of the time, I was spending the day with a friend who had been wonderfully healed through Christian Science. She urged me to try it, but I was very indifferent, and although I drew each breath with greater difficulty and had never been able to get any relief from materia medica, it was with reluctance that I finally consented to go to the nearest practitioner the next day if I were no better.

The next day, Sunday, I went in search of the practitioner, but she was just starting for church and made an appointment with me for the day following. Some years before a similar cold had resulted in a very severe case of erysipelas and many weeks of suffering and anxiety. The members of my family had been in great fear of another attack ever since.
