Our readers will recall the thrilling story of the wreck of the steamer Crescent City off the coast of California, on the morning of January 31, and the following testimony of a Christian Scientist who was on board, will be read with special interest.—EDS.
I would like to show my appreciation of the understanding that Christian Science has given me of God as an ever-present help, by sending this, my experience during a shipwreck.
I left Oakland with my month-old baby on the steamer Crescent City, January 30, to go to my home in Crescent City, and at two o'clock the next morning the steamer was wrecked on Fish Rock, Mendocino Co. I was awake when the vessel struck, as baby had been restless, and I immediately sprang out of my berth declaring that God was there and that He was all powerful. Then it seemed that I was tempted the same as Jesus was in the wilderness, for mortal mind said to me, "Why, you would not be on the rocks if God were here;" but I immediately silenced it by declaring, "It is a lie, God is here and He is all powerful." All the time I was putting on baby's bonnet and wrapping her in a canvas sack that had been made for her, that would protect her from the wind, covering her head and all. After having put on a life-preserver I strapped the baby to my breast with my basket straps. Then the captain and a firman came to tell me that we must get out of there quick. One of the crew came and said that he would stay by me until the last, as he could swim.
