Metaphysical vs. Material Understanding

After gaining a little understanding from the study of the Christian Science text-book, one finds that it is indeed a "Key to the Scriptures." It unfolds to us a basic law of Life and shows us how to apply this law to every-day affairs. In short, it gives us the metaphysical understanding of the Scriptures, which we find necessary for their application to our present needs.

Let us notice the advantage of the metaphysical sense of the Scriptures regarding some of the questions which interest mankind.

One of these is, "What is God?" The Scriptures, spiritually understood, answer this question satisfactorily to all. Interpreted materially, they present a sense of God man-like in form and temperament, loving the good and hating the evil, responsible for all the ills as well as the good of humanity; and many thoughtful people reject such a conception of God. When we get a metaphysical sense of the Scriptures we have the spiritual conception of God who is defined in Christian Science as "universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and sendeth no evil and no sin upon man" (Science and Health, p. 140). We can never rise from the idea of a God who loves and hates, to a God who is Love, except through metaphysics.
