Little more than two years ago

Little more than two years ago. I was treated by a Christian Scientist. For fifteen years I had been a great sufferer, never knowing what it was to be free from pain more than two days at a time. My worst trouble was with my eyes and head. Every ten or twelve days, I would be confined to a darkened room, tasting neither food nor water from one to three days. Sometimes the spell would be so severe that I would have to be chloroformed.

A number of physicians attended me, but I found only temporary relief. Sometimes the interval between the paroxysms would be lengthened, and then they would return worse than ever. I wore a blister on the back of my neck most of the time for fifteen years. We tried everything. I was fitted to glasses by a noted oculist, and he told me I would never see again without glasses, but if I would wear them and be careful with my eyes, he did not think I would suffer. I wore the glasses and did just as he told me, but I got no better. Four years later, I went to an oculist living in our city, and one who is somewhat noted for his success in treating eyes, but the results were equally unsatisfactory.

Later, a specialist, who come to our city, was having good success with others and I went to him. After he examined my eyes he said they were in a terrible condition. but he thought he could help me, and for four weeks he treated me every day, not allowing me to read, write, or sew. Under his treatment, I seemed to be improving somewhat, when one day he said to me, "I am going to dismiss you to-day. I believe you are a Christian lady, and I as a Christian cannot let you pay me any longer, when I know I have exhausted my skill and can do no more for you."
