The Higher Purpose

The popular belief about Christian Science is, to a large extent at least, that it is simply a cure for physical ills, a universal panacea for sickness, and therefore not rightfully called scientific Christianity. If this false concept is due, as it probably is, to our lack of clearness in presenting the subject to the world, it behooves us to give more care and attention to our choice of words and to the impressions they convey.

If the entire mission of Christian Science were but the healing of the sick, its Discoverer and Founder would still be entitled to the gratitude of a disease-burdened race, but its mission is infinitely higher and holier, and we must not lose sight of the fact that the healing of sickness is but the "signs following" the correct and normal understanding of God, whom to know aright is life eternal; and that this healing is not the all and ultimate of Christian Science. The coming of the Christ to human experience results in the destruction of all sin, sickness, and death, because the Christ is God's perfect idea, "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."

The healing of sickness is just as much an essential proof of Christianity as is the healing of sin, and this true and perfect healing was the seal and sign of Jesus' teaching, and we have an unworthy concept of Mrs. Eddy's work if the healing of mankind's aches and pains is all we can offer to the world as justification for Christian Science.
