As one who has been greatly helped by Christian Science...
As one who has been greatly helped by Christian Science treatment, I contribute this testimony in the hope that it may be of some use to others, so that they may be lifted out of their miseries, as I was lifted out of mine.
When Christian Science found me I was absolutely hopeless of ever being well again. I had what the physicians called melancholia. After being under medical treatment for eight months, I lost my position because of my inability to properly perform the necessary duties. I was afterward an inmate of an asylum, adjacent to this city, for eight months, and left there not in the least benefited, mentally or physically, but considerably worse financially.
Under Christian Science treatment there was a slight improvement from the beginning, but after the seventh treatment I had a seeming relapse, and told my sister that I did not see the use of taking up the Scientist's time any longer, as I was no better. The idea of getting well again was almost too much for me. My sister, however, knew that I was better, and persuaded me to continue treatment. That evening I went and told the Scientist my experience of the day, and also added what I had said to my sister. After talking for a while, the Scientist read a particularly helpful testimony from the Christian Science Sentinel, and then said: "Mr. Wheeler, if you wish to continue having the treatment we will keep on, otherwise we will stop. Christian Scientists do not attempt to persuade people to take the treament if they do not wish it." Fortunately I decided to continue, was given a treatment, went home and to bed and slept all night, something I had not done for twelve months. I was amazed to think such a thing could occur. My condition continued to improve, and, after about four months' treatment, I was advised by the Scientist to apply for reinstatement in my former position. I went to the physician who is employed by the company, told him how I was feeling, and also told him I wanted to get back to work. His reply was: "Your improvement has been so rapid, I think you had better wait a while." This, of course, was rather discouraging to me. The following month I again made application, was put back in my old position, am doing better work than I ever did before, and gladly give the credit for all this to Christian Science.
