Resurgam
Dost
seek thy Saviour in the gloom,
Within the rock-bound, vaulted room?
Not there is he;
The Christ ne'er gave himself to death,
The Saviour from its chilling breath
Was ever free.
Dost think that aught could harm or kill
Eternal Life? frustrate the will
Of Him above?
Dost deem that human hate could reach
Almighty Love, Heaven-sent to teach
The Way of Love?
Ah no! the Christ ne'er bore the cross,
Of heavenly joy ne'er knew the loss—
The Perfect One.
The human semblance, on the hill
Of Calvary they sought to kill—
The virgin's son.
O joyful, joyful Easter day!
Thy Saviour lives, has lived alway,
A light to shine
Adown the gloom, that thou may'st see
Thy gift of immortality,
Priceless, divine.
