The End
"The end of all things is at hand." The idea of death has so long been associated with this prophecy that it is well to begin to think of its real meaning. Peter seems to be exhorting the church to follow the example of Jesus in giving up the things of the flesh—and seeking the things of the Spirit.
There is a reasonable requirement of things to eat and drink, and more than this is the indulgence of material sense.
There is a reasonable limit to the things needed to clothe and warm us, more than these are simple vanity and vexation of Spirit. This being conceded, why not be willing to give them up if we can secure spiritual gain thereby?
