Answers Dr. Fitch
North Georgia Citizen
No one will question but that Mr. Fitch thinks he is honest, just, and very broad when he says he has been an unprejudiced reader of all he has seen on Christian Science. A careful reading of his article will show that he does not accord to others the same sense of honesty that he claims for himself. He quotes from Judge Ewing's lecture, in which the judge states that "thousands of absolute cures" have been made in Christian Science, and yet he would have Mrs. Eddy, Judge Ewing, "or some one recognized by her as a representative of Christian Science," come to Dalton and make public demonstrations before he will accept it as being "New Testament religion." Jesus said: "Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed."
Judge Ewing, before coming into Christian Science, was a national character. Within the last year he has addressed as many large and intelligent audiences as any man in the United States, with possibly one or two exceptions. His statements would not be questioned upon any subject outside of Christian Science, but here, as it has ever been, the old religious beliefs yield slowly. Jesus never hippodromed the country with spectacular performances. He healed those that came or were brought to him. Jesus evidently shrank from any public display of his power. He was continually "going to the other side," "disappearing from their midst," "going apart in the mountain to pray." If Mrs. Eddy, or any one of her followers were to accept the challenge to a public garish, dramatic performance, which Mr. Fitch wishes to have in his church, they would be doing just what Jesus said they should not do — "tempt the Lord thy God." On many occasions he said, "Go, and tell no man."
In the Christian Science churches, during their services, wonderful healings have taken place : cripples have been known to leave their crutches in the churches; the deaf have had their hearing restored; the blind received their sight; aches, pains, and disorders of every name and nature have been dispelled. But why should a public demonstration be required of Mrs. Eddy? Last year at the Wednesday evening meeting in Tremont Temple, Boston, which followed the Annual Communion service, where there was an attendance of about thirty-five hundred, Judge Hanna requested all who had been healed by Christian Science to stand up. It was estimated that over half of those in attendance arose. Then he said all who have been healed through reading Mrs. Eddy's book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," please rise. Between three and four hundred arose. It is estimated that nearly one million people have been healed by Christian Science. A few of this vast throng are in Dalton; their testimony would be accepted upon any other question.
